Method

4 steps

  1. 1

Pour ½–¾ cup cold milk into the blender first. Add 2 cups vanilla ice cream (about 4 scoops) and 1 cup frozen strawberries (or fresh hulled strawberries plus a few ice cubes). Add 1–2 teaspoons sugar or honey only if the berries are tart.

  2. 2

Blend until smooth and thick, 10–20 seconds — stop as soon as the pink is even. Over-blending melts the ice cream and thins the shake.

  3. 3

If it's too thick to pour, add a splash more milk; if it's too thin, add another scoop of ice cream and pulse 5 seconds.

  4. 4

Pour into two tall glasses. Top with whipped cream and a strawberry if you like. Serve with a straw. You want a thick strawberry milkshake that barely climbs the straw — not thin pink milk or an ice-cream brick the blender won't move.
