    Heat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour two 8-inch round pans (or line bottoms with parchment).

    Whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Add softened butter and 1/2 cup of the milk; beat on medium 2 minutes until fluffy.

    In another bowl, whisk remaining milk, egg whites, vanilla, and almond extract. Add to the batter in 3 additions, beating 20 seconds after each until smooth and pale.

    Divide between pans. Bake 25–30 minutes until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs and tops spring back. Cool in pans 10 minutes, then turn out onto racks to cool completely before frosting.
