Step by step

Method

4 steps

  1. 1

Scoop the flesh of 1 ripe chilled avocado into a blender. Add ¾–1 cup cold milk (dairy or plant), 1–2 tablespoons sugar, honey, or maple syrup, 1 tablespoon fresh lemon or lime juice, 4–6 ice cubes if you want it colder, and a tiny pinch of salt if you like.

  2. 2

Blend on high 30–45 seconds until completely smooth and pale green — no avocado bits left. Scrape the sides once if needed.

  3. 3

Taste. Add a little more sweetener if it's grassy, or a splash more milk if it's too thick to pour. The citrus should keep it bright, not dull.

  4. 4

Pour into a glass (or two smaller ones) and drink right away so the color stays lively. You want a silky, pale-green smoothie that tastes creamy and lightly sweet — not chunky avocado or a flat, brownish drink that sat too long.
