Method

5 steps

  1. 1

Slice 2 large yellow onions into ½-inch-thick rounds and separate into rings. Pat them dry so the coating sticks.

  2. 2

Set up three bowls: ¾ cup flour; 2–3 large egg whites (or 2 whole eggs) lightly beaten; 1½ cups breadcrumbs or panko mixed with ¾ teaspoon garlic powder, ¾ teaspoon onion powder, ½–¾ teaspoon kosher salt, and optional cayenne or paprika.

  3. 3

Dip each ring in flour, then egg, then breadcrumbs, pressing so the coating grabs. Set coated rings on a plate while you finish the batch.

  4. 4

Preheat the air fryer to 375°F. Arrange rings in a single layer — don't stack — and mist lightly with oil. Air fry 10–14 minutes, flipping once, until deep golden and crisp. Batch so air can move around every ring.

  5. 5

Hit with a pinch more salt if needed and serve right away. You want crunchy golden onion rings with soft sweet onion inside — not pale dusty coating or greasy limp rings.
